Here is a 'test' duel that me and skies did a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will give you a better idea of what to expect from duels!
Character Cards:
Name: Byorn the Powerful (meeb) Race: Human Height: 6'4 Weight: 210 lbs. Attributes Strength: 8 Intellect: 5 Dexterity: 6 Gear: Scale mail armor (with helmet), Two handed axe as main weapon with longsword as secondary. Buckler on back for use with longsword.
Name: Zhengi The Dandy (skies) Race: Wood Elf Hieght:6'0 Wieght: 189 lbs.
Attributes Strength:5 Intellect:7 Dexterity:7
Gear: Espada Ropero, Heavy long knife, doesn't wear armor opting for fine clothes, wears a large brimmed plumed hat
He was looking over here, the finely dressed elf thought. The bar they were in was pretty destitute seeing how it was a holiday. Then again this was the poorer side of town. Zhengi noticed the coin purse hanging from the man's belt. He removed a fine silk glove and walked over to the warrior. He was better dressed for battle, but Zhengi was overconfident. He swung the fine glove, in an attempt to slap the man but a forearm like steel met his finely manicured hand. "Ow! That is it. I challenge you to a duel!" And so the foppish finely dressed elf took a few steps back drawing his sword. The other patrons soon began to back away as the warrior stood to face his antagonist.
Byorn turned, curling his lip in annoyance as a foppish elf came forward to him, moving to challenge the burly human warrior to a dual it seemed by the way he moved his arm. As the elf swung his glove Byorn growled, slapping the thing aside. The elf cried out in a high voice, challenging him to a dual, and Byorn chuckled, "I'll cut you down where you stand, weakling." The opponents stood off about twenty feet from each other. Byorn drew his two handed axe from his back, as the elf drew some kind of rapier like weapon and a long knife. Byorn moved first, wanting to finish the elf off quickly to avoid harm to himself. He took three long steps forward and swung his axe in a swift slash towards the center of the elfs torso, aiming to chop the little nuisance in half.
Zhengi looked his opponent over, though his thoughts were interrupted as the warrior came at him. The man's axe soon came even with the ground at the elf's torso. Zhengi swung his hips back as the axe passed cutting through the air, Zhengi let out a sigh of relief when the axe didn't nice his finely crafted belt buckle. Shifting himself back into his stance, he makes a swift stab at the warrior's back shoulder. I need to cripple this man's powerful arms, Zhengi thought.
The nimble elf hopped backwards, dodging out of the way of the deadly edge of the axe. Quick as a flash the elf darted in, around the larger mans right side, stabbing at his exposed shoulder. The man was fast, and Byorn felt the cold steel of the blade slice through the leather that protected the unscaled part of his shoulder armor. The human warrior whirled, this time bringing his axe up to drive it towards the elf stomach. He felt a small sting on the back of his shoulder, but it was not a serious wound, just a scratch that would not interfere with his movements in the slightest.
The elf found the wind knocked out of him as the bigger man shoved him back. He looked at his blade, though it had drawn blood he could tell that it wasn't enough to cripple the man's arm in the slightest. Zhengi danced away again, shifting his back into his fencer's stance just out of the axe's range. Zhengi smiled and tipped the brim of his hat to his opponent. With a smile he spoke to the warrior before him. "Good show! I must say this will be more fun than I thought."
Byorn grinned as he felt the haft of his axe smack solidly into the elfs gut. The attack wasn't enough to hurt him much, although it might give him a bruise, but at least it got him to back off a bit. The human warrior took another short swing at his opponent to make sure he backed off enough to give Byorn some space. His axe had much longer reach than the elfs sword and dagger, and he aimed to use that to his advantage. As the elf stepped back he tipped his hat complimenting Byorn by saying 'good show!' in a very snobbish way. The human briefly wondered what such a man was doing in this dingy bar, but soon discounted the thought as irrelevant. The human warrior nodded, grinning, "Indeed, you are a fast little bugger aren't you? Come, let me plant my axe in your head!" With that the man charged forward again, this time sweeping his weapon before him in a short arc in hopes of disctracting the elf before he used the momentum of the swing to bring the blade of the weapon down in a wicked fast overhead chop towards the elfs skull.
The elf smiled at the warrior as he sweeping his weapon in front of him. What a strange ritual, the elf thought. Suddenly, the warrior's axe came down in a vicious arc. The smiled died as Zhengi moved to dodge, but he was a few seconds to late as he felt the axe make contact with his hat. As he stumbled back he looked in horror as the heavy blade was imbedded into the floorboard, pinning the cleaved plumed hat. The elf looked in horror. "Well congratulations," He said dryly. "You managed to kill my hat." The elf found it strange that a warrior of this caliber was hanging out in a dingy bar like this, though he supposed that hard times can befall the strong. "You seem like a nice man," The elf said in his whimsical accent. "I would normally hate to kill you, but I really liked that hat." Not dropping his smile he charged forward as the warrior started to pull on his axe.
Byorn was surprised when the nimble elf was able to dodge completely out of the way of his arcing blade. He did manage to slice through the mans hat, pinning it to the floorboards as his axe thunked into the wood. The elf gave a furious frown, obviously annoyed by the destruction of his hat. Byorn smiled, "I did you a favor, it was a ugly hat." The elf replied with a witty remark before charging forward towards Byorn. With one strong jerk the human ripped his axe from the floorboards, just in time to knock aside the elfs incoming rapier. Before Byorn had a chance to perform a counterattack the elf darted back again. Growling ferociously, Byorn aimed a slower, more measured swing at his opponents torso, testing his abilities.
Zhengi smiled, and twisted away from the powerful man. He wasn't tired per say, but he was a seasoned enough fighter to know he couldn't keep this up. With a smile he dropped his guard putting the point of his sword onto the floor boards ever so lightly. "How rude of me. I am called Zhengi," the elf puffed out his chest and stuck his sharp chin into the air. "May I have the honor of yours?" Zhengi hoped that the sudden shift in mood would confuse the man. All I need is a second, Zhengi thought. He may have been locking eyes with his opponent, but his focus was one the barroom. Looking for something to give him a slight advantage. With a flick of his wrist, the blade was rested at a salute reminiscent of a more official fencing match. Another flick and Zhengi re-entered his fencing stance, his plan still barely an idea but forming quickly.
The elf dodged quickly out of the way of Byorn's axe swing, which was to be expected. He was far to fast to be hit by the slower weapon, but if Byorn could wear him down so he was tired he might stand a chance of scoring a blow on his opponent. Indeed, when the elf stepped back he moved into a resting position, and told Byorn his name, asking for his own. The Human warrior suspected his opponent was merely trying to distract him, so he made his response as short as possible, "Byorn. Raise your sword and fight me like a man elf!" As Byorn took a step forward Zhengi raised his blade back into a defensive position. The Human warrior attacked first once more, trying to keep the elf on the defensive. He took another long step forward, taking another measured swing. As he expected, the elf dodged out of the way of the slower attack, but before he could make a counter Byorn twisted his axe to the side as it bounced against the bar. He used the change in momentum to bring the blunt back side of the axe swinging towards Zhengi's jaw.
Zhengi saw the rapid re-direction of the blade, and on instinct pulled his head away. Zhengi watched as the heavy weapon flew by his neck. As he straightened himself out he lunged forward, his long knife in his left hand striking towards the man's neck. He didn't check if he had connected, because he hooked his pommel onto a nearby stool and with all his might launched the improvised weapon at the warrior's legs. Zhengi spun around, trying to get behind the warrior. I have resorted to trying, the Elf mused. How odd. With a laugh more associated with noblewoman Zhengi spoke to his opponent. "Fight like a man... What would that entail? Does that mean I have to cut my ears?"
Byron was yet again surprised by the elfs alacrity. As he swung his axe towards the annoying creatures jaw Zhengi leaned backwards, and the axe just barely missed his body. With deadly speed the elf sprung back at him, aiming a stab with his knife at his throat. Byorn had little time to react, and he couldn't move his axe around to block the incoming knife, so he twisted his body, raising his left shoulder so the knife deflected of his pauldron. Before he could realign his body Zhengi used the pommel of his rapier to hurl one of the bar stools at him. Byorn had to think fast, he knew Zhengi was going to try and come around his flank to stab his blade into the weak spot in his armor below his left arm, so he resorted drastic action. As the bar stool flew towards him Byorn dropped his axe, catching the stool and whirling it around behind him as the elf tried another stab at his back. the stool did a good job deflecting the rapier, and before his opponent could recover from the unexpected parry Byorn raised the stool above his head, throwing it practically point blank at the elf. He quickly backed off then, not taking the time to bend over to pick up his axe but instead drawing his longsword. He also unstrapped the buckler on his back, sliding it down his arm and putting one of the straps on. He didn't have enough time to secure both of them, so that would have to do for now.
Zhengi staggered backwards from the powerful warrior and the chair which had betrayed him so viciously. As he straightened himself he saw the man disregard his axe for his sword and shield. Zhengi's mind was whirling, he was mad at himself for forgetting more of his weapons. Zhengi looked at the hair that was hanging in front of his eyes, with a smile he began combing his hair with the multi toothed pommel of his dagger. With a smile he stared back at his adversary, all he needed to do was nick him with the dagger.
Byorn narrowed his eyes at the elf, there was something off about the way he smiled as he combed back a wayward forelock of hair with the pommel of his dagger. Frowning, Byorn rushed forward around the left side of the table, aiming a swift and powerful stab at the elf gut. He hoped to make the swing strong enough to make it hard to block, but annoying to dodge. When he stabbed, he was also sure to keep his buckler up, ready for any sudden ripose.
Zhengi smiled as the warrior came forward, his stab was a measured thing but still a threat. The elf had notived the warrior was now wielding a new set of weapons. Zhengi smiled as he spun around the right side of the table. He shoved the table on to its side to block the warriors view and maybe even force him off balance. Dropping into a crouch the elf, began staining to hear working his way around to the edge closer to his adversary. After all, Zhengi had shown he didn't mind trying to stab an enemy in the back. So he had to predict that the warrior would have to turn if only for a second to make sure the Elf didn't go around the right side and flank him.
The elf jumped out of the way of his stab yet again, although Byorn suspected he was getting tired by this point. Zhengi skirted around the opposite side of the table flipping it up on its side to block his body from view. Byorn moved back a step, frowning. This elf was a tricky little bugger. He decided to not wait for the elf to come out, but made his own attack. Moving forward he kicked the table with all his might, sending it sliding back. He heard a thud as it hit the elf, but he wasn't sure which side of the table he had been nearer too, so he took a chance. Taking a wild guess the human warrior stepped around the left side of the table, to see the elf just in front of him. Luck it seems, was on his side (I actually flipped a coin to decide which side he went around, so random chance. You'll have to take me for my word :/). As he stepped around the corner he swung his sword in a horizontal swipe at Zhengi's neck.
Zhengi smiled and fell his stomach, and heard the sword thud into the table. When the warrior kicked said table, it surprised him but he recovered quickly. Zhengi quickly forced himself up, slamming his entire body into the man's sword arm, but his rise what somewhat weakened when the guard of the blade dug into his spine. Zhengi stabbed at the man's armpit with his long dagger. At this time he tried to stab the man's foot as well. If he was lucky he could pin the man's foot to the floor. Like my poor hat, Zhengi thought stifling a tear.
The elf dropped underneath Byorn's vicious swing, although his attack did not hit, Zhengi's dodge was a desperate one, and it gave Byorn the upper hand because the elf was on the ground, and less mobile. Unfortunately, his opponent rose quickly to his feet, trying to bat aside Byorn's sword arm with his body. Luckily the elf wasn't very heavy or strong, at least in comparison to the mighty armored warrior, so his slam hardly moved Byorn's arm at all. The dagger thrust on the other hand, was much more dangerous. As the elf tried a thrust with his dagger towards Byorn's side once again, the human warrior lowered his buckler, just barely managing to deflect the strike into his scale armor. The elf also tried to stab at his foot with his rapier, but luckily the metal of his armored boots was too thick for the thin blade to slice through, and it simply skated off the side to stick into the floor a bit. Zhengi's attack had been a good one, but he was now in a vulnerable position. Byorn quickly brought his sword arm down, pinning Zhengi to his chest in a headlock. The elfs rapier was practically useless from this position, but the dagger could pose a significant threat, so Byorn grasped with his hand for the elfs wrist, hoping to disarm him.
Zhengi was crushed close to the man. But he had a smile on his face again, as he spit into the man's eye. With a dancer-like step he spun out of the man's weak one arm hold, the man was grabbing at his other arm but Zhengi brought his knee up knocking the smaller shield slightly off course. Zhengi released the rapier and wrapped his arm around the man's neck. He knew if given enough time the warrior could escape, so Zhengi placed the dagger against the man's neck applying pressure. It wasn't enough to cut, but if the warrior moved to much the blade would place a small cut onto to man's neck. "Now then my friend. You may not quite know it but we are at an impasse."
The slippery elf twisted around, escaping Byorn's one armed pin with annoying ease. With a kick he pushed away Byorn's buckler, wrapping his main sword arm about the larger humans neck and bringing his now free knife up to his throat. Byorn knew he couldn't block the strike in time, so he moved his free sword arm to touch heavily enough against the fabric of Zhengi's shirt for him to notice its presence, but not enough to break the skin. The elf spoke, saying they were at an impasse. Byorn glared at the man, "Indeed, you stab me I cut open your guts, I do that you stab me. So what'll it be? We both die or call it a draw and return to our starting positions?"
Zhengi smiled, and released the man sheathing his dagger. Zhengi moved away from the man who was still on guard. Zhengi picked of his rapier and placed it back into its sheath. The elf laughed at the serious man who's eyes never left the finely dressed elf. "I say we call it a draw. But I feel my organization would be annoyed if we continued." With a bow Zhengi picked up the two pieces of his hat, and left for the door. "Plus if I leave you alive you can buy me a replacement hat. Congratulations It appears the test is over. Don't worry I doubt I will be a stranger." With a smile the elf exited the door, and pulled out the coin purse he noticed before. Well that was dramatic for 30 silver, Zhengi thought with a laugh.
Byorn shrugged indifferently at the man, "Very well, take your leave then. Don't expect a new hat though." As the elf walked out Byorn went back to the bar, picking his axe up again and reaching into his pouch to tip the bartender for his trouble. Thats when he discovered his missing money pouch, and cursed loudly. "That little thief! I'll kill him!" He was just about to get up and go outside after the annoying elf when a man beside him spoke, "Naah don't bother friend, he'll be long gone by now. But come friends, lets give this man a little gold for the good show!" Somewhat surprised, Byorn didn't say no to the silver and gold pieces the men around him tossed to him, "Ah well, who's up for a drink then?" The human asked. There was a rousing cheer around them, and the group readied themselves for a night of drink and fun.
